We are extremely proud and humbled to share with you a view of NOA through others eyes... Below is a list of testimonials and artists stories who have been involved with and/or entered the National Open Art Competition over the past few years.
Before things get going for NOA17 I wanted to write you a brief thank you note for the exemplary level of organisation of NOA16. I had two pictures in the Mercer’s Hall exhibition, the standard of work in the exhibition was excellent and I was proud to have been included, from start to finish this competition was efficiently and expertly run, unfortunately, I know this having been involved in some competitions where the opposite was true!
I shall be entering in 2017 and hope to be selected again!
Thanks again and regards,
I just wanted to say a BIG thank you for all the effort and support that the NOA team has put in behind the scenes with the organisation and exhibition of this year at Mercers Hall, a great venue.
Your hard work and dedication was evident walking around the beautifully curated exhibition. The mood was supportive and positive amongst the fellow artists at the private views.
I was so proud to be awarded a prize this year and to be able to put this on my art biography and the prize will fund another year of making art.
I have entered NOA since 2010 and this was my first time exhibiting. It was wonderful to meet all the team in person, who have been so supportive and encouraging, regardless, over the last few years. I have in turn encouraged many artist friends to enter and will continue to.
Thank you once again, it has been a memorable and uplifting experience in my art career.
This is the one open competition I really feel is worth entering, with superb back-up and assistance!
I thought I would write to thank, the transport agents and the handling staff at NOA who looked after my painting so expertly while it was with you for the shortlisting process. It arrived back in Northern Ireland this morning after a long journey, via England and Scotland in pristine condition and none the worse for its great adventure.
It was a pleasure for me to be a small part of such a wonderful competition and I would also like to thank you personally for your courtesy and help with the query's I had during my participation in it.
I congratulate all the worthy finalists and I hope it is a great success for all concerned.
NOA through the eyes of others: “Loving taking part in all the tweets and social media what a brilliant job you are doing and a great boost to the artists - so many and all so excited!!!
All the best,
I can't tell you how fantastic you guys at @tnoac HQ are!
Judging thousands of artworks is a challenge, but the experience is essentially a privileged glimpse of the creative energy at work in Britain and Ireland today. I’m impressed with the strength and diversity of the submissions. What comes through for me is a sense of invention and a seriousness of intent, sometimes along with irreverence and humour. It’s a healthy picture of the art in these Islands.

NOA is an extraordinary institution, founded by the Duke of Richmond. Originally a local organisation, it has, through drive and vision, now achieved the position of being the UK’s best open art competition attracting a total spectrum of applicants from schoolchildren to some of the leading fine artists in the country.
I collected my work from Pulborough today and I just wanted to thank you for the opportunity to take part in NOA this year. Everyone was so friendly and it was a really positive experience. I’m so pleased that I made the shortlist. Good luck with the show in London, I’m sure it will look great and I’m hoping to come up to London to see it.

Many thanks for putting on such a great show! and producing a high-quality catalogue that has great kudos and a long shelf life, as I am able to show folk it when they visit my studio. I am very grateful for this opportunity and glad that resilience kept me wanting to apply and was successful this year. Micahel Angove was a great advocate for you and I am grateful for his encouragement, this year, and I was delighted to be amongst a talented crowd.
Warm congratulations to everyone and gratitude to all art lovers for coming out to support NOA winners. Thrilled to be shortlisted again this year and look forward to entering again next year from West Cork Ireland.

Hi NOA Team, thank you so much for including me in the online gallery! I feel very honoured and I look forward to seeing the other entries.
Once again, HUGE thanks to you’re your team for the excellent competition and exhibition. I hope to apply again next year and will spread the word…
Lovely story and complete coincidence that a granddaughter Bela was selected by our children’s judge Deborah Turk and her grandmother Adrienne, was selected by the judging panel – we were only made aware of this wonderful scenario when they contacted us;
I just wanted to say how much it meant to our family when Bela had her picture hung in the Children's Exhibition and what a tremendous idea to have it alongside the more mature show. It made a wonderful memory for Bela and myself, her Granny to hang in the same exhibition.
Thank you again,
I'm delighted, almost chuffed even to have been selected for the #Aestheticaartprize. It comes off the back selection for the National Open Art Competition and a commission for Art And Music magazine.
I just wanted to thank the entire team at the NOA for their amazing work! The selection, the curating and also the wonderful people who donated the prizes....am delighted with 'NOA16 Best Portrait Award'!
So, once again, many thanks,
I was shortlisted for the NOA exhibition 2015 and although my painting did not make the final selection I felt very supported by the NOA team and organisation. At the same time as submitting a painting I applied, successfully, to be an AIR and subsequently spent some time painting in situ at the RCA. My work was then exhibited at HIVE and The Other Art Fair and I received updates and feedback from the team which is always invaluable. I have also made artist contacts through my experience with NOA and had the opportunity to meet Art professionals.
This success story started with my work being accepted into the NOA 2014 exhibition. Whilst the show was open at Somerset House in London, my work was spotted by a London buyer, who purchased a print. Several months later I received an email from the British Museum, informing me that one of my prints had been donated to their collection, requesting me to provide them with all the required information for their archive listing. The print is now part of their Collection, and is listed on the BM Collection database.
Very best wishes to you,
I was delighted when I was chosen in my second year of entering to be a NOA finalist and have my work on public display for the first time. The recognition and the first sale of my work has encouraged me to tread more rungs of the ladder to becoming a serious artist and helps when that seems too great an expectation. Having also helped out as a volunteer, I have seen first hand a fraction of the cheerful, demanding and purposeful work put in by the team that make the competition so successful. I will not hesitate to enter this year but fear the standards will be higher and the competition stronger as the competition picks up the momentum it deserves and I (reluctantly) encourage others to do the same!
Was thrilled to see my painting at Arundel Castle yesterday possibly the only time my work will be exhibited in the same room as a Van Dyke and a Millais. Thanks so much for the opportunity.
Thank you for keeping my painting in the safe place and for your helpful and kind attitude. NOA is my favorite competition/art event in the UK, because of its variety and such an excellent selection of works! Even if I was not selected I still will submit next year just to support the great event! It's a pleasure to visit NOA exhibitions every year.
Dear Cloe and the NOA Team,
Thank you all for organising such a wonderful exhibition which was beautifully hung and cataloged, and for all your ongoing help and support. I greatly appreciate the opportunity I have been given to show at NOA, Pallant House Gallery and HIVE, and was delighted to win a generous monetary award sponsored by the Merrion Hotel in Dublin. I don't do facebook so am not able to comment and like what you put on there, so am telling you this by email instead. You all did a great job and your support to artists from throughout the UK and Ireland is commendable.
Just to say, I am !! DELIGHTED !! to have had three works selected. There is so much absolutely outstanding work in the exhibition. Thank you for all you did, as Competition Director, and to rest of the NOA team for making the wonderful NOA15 happen!!
Best wishes from,
Thank you for your lovely letter about helping artists. I certainly appreciate all your hard work and creativity trying to finds means and ways of supporting artists. It is marvelous what you are doing and I have subsequently submitted work for assessment to show my support. I don’t expect to get in but glad to know that my submission [fee] is going to support other artists along the way. I wish you great success with their forthcoming event and look forward to seeing the selected artworks.
With very best wishes from
Thank you so much for using my image on the NOA competition email, lots of people have been in touch because of the exposure!
I just want you to know how important the work you do with NOA really is and how drastically you have changed my life. NOA is the only way some artists can get any exposure for their work and without it some would never ever have a chance of any career at all.
I would like to say that exhibiting in the National Open Art Exhibition changed my life in such a wonderful way. Not only did it build my confidence in exhibiting my art, it gave me a whole new platform to build from. I felt appreciated and encouraged. The National Open Art Competition made a way for me in the art world by becoming recognised by many of the viewing public and the response from them was incredible. It was a true honour and such a humbling experience. I am so grateful.
Firstly, I just want to say thank you for packing up my extra work for the courier. Secondly, I have only just read the e-mail saying I am one of the prize winners as it was in my junk mail. I’ve just jumped around the room and screamed very loudly as it was like having a very lovely third surprise. Getting through the first round of judging was amazing, and then to the final exhibition was brilliant, but then a prize as well!
Anyway, I just want to say thank you and I’m so glad I entered. Would you please pass on my gratitude to all the judges – it was actually the great line-up of judges that persuaded me to enter this particular competition.
Thanks again for arranging such a terrific show. NOA has helped change my life considerably.
I am delighted that my work has been selected for the National Open Art Exhibition, which is doing so much to help artists get their work seen and fanning the flame of public enthusiasm for art. The NOA team are friendly, consistently helpful and encouraging, so thank you very much.
I am so thrilled and uplifted by this news. I am having my first solo exhibition in London for over twenty years and have been full of pre-exhibition anxiety. This is a great boost to my confidence right now.
Thank you again for all your very kind help. Competitions like NOA are vital for artists, the only way for an unknown artist to get their work seen. There are so many talented people out there and NOA gives them a chance and more importantly hope!
Thank you very much indeed. I must say that for an organisation dealing with over 3000 aspiring hopefuls you've been very personable, supportive and helpful, both Amanda Kings and yourself. Also, I remember the people you had looking after the show last year gave me quite some of their time on the day so I just want to say it's quite a pleasure to be able to take part in something like this and well
done for creating the opportunity for us all. All best wishes then for another wonderful exhibition this year.
The National Open Art Exhibition was my first opportunity to put a large scale work on show in central London. It was a big career step for me and has positively influenced subsequent pieces.
I entered at the last minute, thinking I’d never get in. I entered five last year and none of my paintings got in, but this year I tried to be more true to myself and chose one painting that I felt reflected my style most. It was great to get in and it’s opened many doors because people have been contacting me since the exhibition. It’s been a really nice experience.
